North East Investment Gateway
The networking idea was floated by Mr. Kashinath Hazarika, Chairman and Managing Director, North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (NEDFi) in New York during the North East India Investment conference on the 26th September, 2007, which was marked by a substantial presence of North East Non Resident Indians (NENRI) in USA.
Networking indicates a group of inter-connected or co-operating individuals/ institutions/ organizations who form the group with the objective of achieving identified social, cultural, economic, financial, commercial benefits for achieving larger collective well being. This can be achieved through cross fertilization of ideas/ cross learning, leveraging on mutual strengths, sharing of knowledge, experience, expertise, technology and cross selling.
In the conference, it was felt that there was a need for networking with NE-NRIs because:
-
They possess large intellectual capital
-
Have intimate knowledge of people, society, economy of North East India
-
Moreover, there is a huge pool of resources from which NE India can benefit.
-
There is great value in establishing this network since it can generate new & positive impact in NE India. It can enhance visibility of NE India to a wider audience. .
It can create a knowledge platform to provide impetus for change & new direction in business models and enhance intellectual resources. It can also leverage on the inherent strength of the people of NER and create goodwill for the region as a whole.
Networking is expected to attract international investors, mobilize resources and promote joint ventures. It would facilitate inflow of NRI savings into NE India, especially in the fixed income instruments, create market access & awareness of NE products and enable technology transfer to suit local needs.
NEDFi would act as the contact point for all investors seeking investment in this region and co-ordinate with the State Governments and their agencies as well as other financial institutions and banks for financial as well as other requirements needed to facilitate investment in the region. NEDFi under its TEDF programme has already outlined a number of project profiles of viable projects in the region.
As a start up to the process, NEDFi has opened a Gateway under this website northeast.nedfi.com. Pertinent information about north east, investment opportunities, necessary links, etc for facilitating and creating a value chain in the development process will be provided to the prospective investors by NEDFi. Large number of participants who had shown keen interest in the New York conference have been registered in this Gateway.
In a way this interactive platform designed to share knowledge, information, ideas and suggestions, is a beginning of a larger process of collective initiative to catalyze economic activity in the Region.
